Saul continued to pursue David, and the tribe which inhabited the area where David hid planned to betray him. In this passage, the contrast between Saul and David is clearly seen. Saul, and even the Ziphites who tried to win Saul’s favor, put their trust in other humans to get what they want.

In this passage we see another example of David’s trust in God. David was confronted by the Philistines, so he went to God in prayer for advice. David was seeking God’s will for him. He did not rush off and attack the enemy relying on his previous accomplishments even though he had established himself as a formidable warrior. He first sought God. In this passage, we see jealousy, insecurity, and irrational vengeance on the part of Saul. Because Doeg told the king that David went to Ahimelech for advice, Saul concluded that the priests conspired with David (son of Jesse) against him. When Ahimelech described David as a faithful servant, Saul reacted violently and ordered the priests killed.

In this passage, David was on the run from Saul although he didn’t know what he had done to offend him. Up to now, David had been a faithful subject who had delivered a number of military victories. This was actually what caused Saul’s problem with David. Saul was jealous of him because David’s reputation was growing an in Saul’s mind exceeded his own.
