In the beginning of this reading (2 Samuel 2:4) David finally meets up with his destination, or God’s will, to be king over the house of Judah. It’s rare that people know what God’s will for them is, and here David must feel absolutely blessed being in this position. This blessing fills him with Lord’s love. When David gets wind of the men who give such a respectful and kind gesture in burying Saul, he blesses the men. He also asks the Lord, in return for their gesture, to show them kindness and faithfulness (2 Samuel 2:6).
How many times have you been unkind, ungrateful, or have shown a lack of respect for others? I know that in my life I could not possibly count the times that I have acted like this. Looking back at these moments, maybe it was because I was tired or stressed over something completely different in my life. But the real loss is that it brings you down even farther to be so cold to others. I once heard somewhere, as advice on the radio or in a reading, to stop and periodically give thanks to someone who you might not even know, or bless someone that you come in contact with during your busy day. I have recently started to do this, and what a difference it has made in my life. Not only is it positive for the person receiving the blessing, but it also affects my heart. It’s a feeling of the Holy Spirit working in my life. I also believe that by passing on a blessing to others, it fills them up with the love of God to further pass on to others. You could call it a “pay it forward” feeling. My wife once was going through the drive-thru of a fast food restaurant and ordered our meal. When she pulled up to the window to pay for our meal, the employee working informed her that the vehicle in front of her paid on her behalf. At first she thought it was a joke but in the end it was actually a random act of kindness, so random that she did not believe it. This was so moving, even though it was only fast food, that it inspired her on a later date to give the same gesture to someone else, to pay it forward! My point is that God’s love is important, and by showing kindness, whether through a random act or planned event, it becomes transforming to others.
It was Jesus’ plan entirely to show others his love and for all people to have love for each other. I ask that you to take the time out of your busy schedule to intentionally bless someone. In addition, perform a random act of kindness for someone as a reflection of God’s love, because it is addicting.
God Bless,
Jessie
