1 Kings 9:10-28 Week 28 : Day 4

by Sarah Knight

I have three sisters who are all basically the same size (myself included). Sometimes for Christmas my parents or other family members would get us four pieces of jewelry or four different color sweaters and just assume that we’d politely distribute them amongst ourselves in a ladylike manner. This was not quite the case, as we’d have knock down drag out fights over the best piece of jewelry or the same blue sweater, and usually the best hair puller got first pick. Now that we’re older, we don’t really pull hair; we find nicer ways of manipulating to get what we want.

King Hiram seems like a pretty selfless guy to me. He provided lots of materials to Solomon during the building of the temple and then got repaid in “worthless” land. You’d think his dealings with Solomon would be done after that, but he’s mentioned a couple more times in the reading, after donating more of his men to help with a fleet of ships to get more gold for Solomon.

I’m not sure what happens after this; whether Hiram gets repaid or not, I don’t know. It seems like he got ripped off, but he still stayed and helped out, because he could. He didn’t throw a fit or demand a better trade off. Sometimes it’s hard to put others first and lay aside our own selfish desires, even if things don’t seem exactly “fair.”

Your fellow traveler,
Sarah

Re: Sticking Around when Things Aren't Fair

Sarah, I've valued your posts a lot this week. You and Rusty both have really practical and insightful points to make. Things have been a bit rough for me lately, and it's encouraging to read posts like yours that seem authentic and grounded (as do many of the other authors here). Thanks for the thought that went into your writing.
