Did you ever watch Mission Impossible? “Your mission, Jim, should you choose to accept it….” I thought about that when reading this passage. Elisha gives an unnamed man a mission that ends with the words “run; don’t delay!” I wonder what the man felt as he headed out to Ramoth Gilead – fear…anticipation…excitement? Did the adrenaline start pumping into his system as he got closer? Did he determine the fastest route out of town before completing his mission?

I like that we know very little about this young prophet. I like that his obedience to God and the mission itself are the focus. Did you notice how Elisha told him to say one sentence, but he ended up saying six? He didn’t quote Elisha; God spoke through him. That’s the most amazing part of the passage. It wasn’t what he said, as much as from whom the words came that mattered! Then, as if becoming himself again, he opened the door and ran. Mission accomplished!!

God calls ordinary folk like you and me all the time for His extraordinary missions. Whether we accept them or not is up to us. The first time I took the risk and accepted an assignment from God, I was fearful. It ended up being an amazing experience, and I knew the result had nothing to do with my abilities. I was just His vessel. How about you – are you willing to accept a mission from God?
