Are you a big picture person, or are you detail oriented? Can you visualize what something will look like in its completed form, or do you see all the pieces that need to fit together in order for it to be completed? Hmm…it seems to me that Nehemiah had the ability to do both. God gave him the big picture vision of rebuilding the wall and the city of Jerusalem. Then in today’s reading, God put on his heart to assemble nobles, officials and common people for registration.
Wow, talk about detail. I have seen first hand the registration piece of 600 plus children that attend Browncroft’s Vacation Bible School each June. Last year, as I looked over at the stack of registration forms that were sitting on Kim Igoe’s desk, I thanked the Lord that she was assigned to that task. Can you guess who is a big picture person in our office? Thankfully, in the Children’s Ministry office, we have forms and computers to help in this process. Back in Nehemiah’s time the process was much more grueling and time consuming. That must have taken patience and real attention to detail. Genealogies were valued in those times, it was important for a Jew to prove that he or she was a descendant of Abraham and part of God’s people.
So God, our creator, is both big picture and detail oriented. Big picture: “God so loved the WORLD that he gave his only son.” Detail: “that WHOSOEVER (you) believes on him will not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Amazing!

Tricia
