Week 49 : Day 4

Nehemiah 8Route 365

by Tricia Yoder

“Boys, don’t forget your Bibles” I hear myself saying as we head out the door on a Sunday morning. I can rest assured in the fact, that if one of us does forget our Bible there are plenty of copies in the church. It is easy to take for granted the written word of God and its availability to us.

In Nehemiah 8, all the people were assembled as one man, they were unified, their purpose: to hear God’s word. They did not have Bibles of their own as we do today. Ezra, the scribe, was standing above them and reading from the Law of Moses. (These readings were most likely the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible.) As he began to read, they stood up with anticipation. They verbally responded and lifted up their hands; they bowed down out of respect, and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground. These people were active participants at this gathering. Can you see it? This was not a setting where they came and expected to be entertained, or get their message for the week. They desired to be with God, to hear from him, and respond to him. Can you think of a time you were so hungry that when you finally did get food it tasted sooo good? These people were hungry for God. This assembly wept as they heard the words of the law and realized their disobedience. Nehemiah, Ezra, and the Levites told them not to weep, this was a sacred day. “Don’t grieve; the joy of the LORD is your strength.” Rejoice, celebrate, and give to those in need was what they were commanded to do. They responded and did as they were told. How do you respond to God’s word? Do you open it with great anticipation for what God will show you? The Bible can move us, motive us, and feed us - if we let it.

When you leave for church next Sunday, “Don’t forget your Bible.” Just in case you do, we have one for you.

Your fellow traveler,

Tricia
