This weekend our attention will be focused again on the tragedy of September 11, 2001. Beyond the loss of life, we also experienced a loss of place in the world and a loss of innocence. The way we saw the world, the way the world saw us as a nation, the way we saw ourselves forever changed.
Ten years later an increasing number of voices from all sides speak of America’s decline. A struggling economy, a weakened government, a loss of leadership in the world.
The reasons for decline are not nearly as important as the questions it raises.
What is most important in life? What are the true sources of peace and happiness? What do we as a country most rely on for our well-being and what is the object of our best hopes and aspirations?
Ten years later our country is in crisis, a crisis of hope that cannot be solved by government or any external action but by a return to God.
As a church of the living God we, along with others, must lead the way. Each one of us and then together all of us turning our lives over to God and then turning our hearts toward the needs around us.
This Sunday morning I plan to begin a series of messages that will lead us through this process over the next few months.
This Sunday night, on the eve of the anniversary, I will be leading a church wide time of prayer for our nation, our city and our church. I am asking each of you to join me as we ask God to renew in each of us and our church His calling.
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. - 2 Chronicles 7.14
Also seek the peace and prosperity of the city (country) to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper. - Jeremiah 29.7
