The beginning of a new year brings with it a desire to change—to evaluate and improve ourselves. In one sense it’s arbitrary—January 1 is just another day—but in another sense it’s part of our nature. Every year we experience levels of change; some we desire, many we do not. We have no control over our age and many of our circumstances. We have limited control over our body and our physical health. Our spiritual health, however, is another matter. Ironically it is the one thing we have a significant hand in advancing.
Unlike our circumstances or even our health, investments in our spiritual life are not outcome-based. That is, we don’t take this action to experience this result. We are not building a muscle as much as a new life with God. The Psalmist uses the image of a tree to characterize this new life (Psalm 1). A tree that yields its fruit in season, that is, growth that is unique to the individual and that takes place over the course of time. Spiritual growth is not about how we look or where we live, but about what is taking place inside of us. What that growth looks like only God knows but it is described as a personal prosperity in line with being blessed.
So what is our role? It’s largely about taking steps and building habits: ones that expand our capacity for the life of God to grow in us.
Things like:
· Daily reading of the Bible
· Praying more
· Developing deeper relationships with other believers who can speak into your life
· Finding an area to serve others on regular basis
Taking steps with you in 2012,
Pastor Rob
