1 Samuel 9:18-10:16 Week 8 : Day 3

by Tim Chase

Again, in this passage we see behind the scenes, God’s intentions and designs laid out for those who believe but cannot see how God is preparing others to intersect and change their lives. Keeping in mind that we are not to fully see all of this from above but are to trust that if we listen to Godly people, and learn to listen to God in our own thoughts, then God will bring us to the next place he has for us, even when it doesn’t seem like the right place for us. That’s because we couldn’t and wouldn’t think it possible without his intervention.

Have you ever been thrust into a sudden change from a comfortable environment, one in which you felt like you were truly where you belonged, and could never imagine enjoying a different one as much, or even more? This could be a work environment, a social environment, or certainly any group membership where you feel you are either one of the “crowd” or a major contributor. It’s a place where you feel comfortable, even though at the same time you do have some thoughts that you pull a little more weight than others, but you just keep playing along because it’s easy and comfortable. Or maybe you’re just not confident and doubt that you could do more. Then one day, suddenly the environment changes and people come to you with good news or, as so often happens, with bad news, everything changes and your situation is turned upside down. The comfort and normalcy are gone. How do you respond?

Now in this passage I feel Saul is feeling comfortable. He seems good natured and somewhat content from what we can tell, but when Samuel starts to tell him God’s instructions, Saul immediately is confused and wonders how Samuel could see things differently from what is customary. Samuel’s easy style goes over well with Saul, who appears to be a faithful man. After the meal with Samuel, Saul obeys and goes on his way to his new objective, faithfully, trusting and believing. And as we’ll see tomorrow Saul starts to see all of the things line up perfectly, just the way Samuel said they would.

Now I can say in my life I have been very comfortable with situations, somewhat fearful of any change, and certainly hesitant for more responsibility, especially leadership. Whether prodded, forced, or just taking a leap of faith, I can say that I’ve so far succeeded in finding the “new” situation more rewarding and fruitful because I went faithfully, praying, and trusting that God is directing and supporting me. With each major change I’ve experienced, I couldn’t imagine going back, even if there was a rough start. What about you? Do you lean on God during change?

Your Fellow Traveler,

Tim
