1 Samuel 10:17-27
Proverbs 12:16
Week 8 : Day 5

by Tim Chase

In the conclusion of this story, Samuel brings Saul to the people and announces him to them. Immediately people see that Saul is different. However, it appears that they don’t care about Samuel explaining that Saul is chosen by God to lead; they just are happy to have a new king. The people appear to have no faith and just want the leader to take care of them so that they can enjoy their lives and be like the other nations. They don’t care that God has been good to them.

In our lives, having faith in faithful leaders to make the right choices will allow us to maybe start to look at the choices made differently, or trust that it’s the right choice and not immediately doubt and be negative, instead of just going about our lives just expecting leaders to provide our comfort.

I believe we must all have faith in our chosen leaders and do our best to pray for them and work together and not criticize. Give them time to do their job. Take solace in knowing that the leader is faithful, and thank God for that. What if he wasn’t?

Now the passage for the day does not give us any insight into what happens during Saul’s reign as king. I hope that you continue to follow next week, as we will start to see what happens. Will the people become faithful and understand and listen to Saul, or will they just demand that he make things like the other kingdoms that the people want to emulate? Will they help him and support him?

Your Fellow Traveler,

Tim

Thanks, Tim. Good job! Thanks for your reminder to pray for the leaders. As an elder at BCC it is reassuring when people pray for their leaders.

Re: 1 Samuel 10:17-27 : Proverbs 12:16 : Chosen by God

Although this passage does not address Saul as King it does tell us about his character. He is not one to follow directions...not from Samuel and not from God. Saul does not comply with the call to stand before God - he hides in baggage! That first account of Saul tells us volumes of who he is as a young man. isn't it interesting that the Proverbs verse addresses the characteristic of Saul? Thanks for this response to these verses.
