1 Samuel 14:15-23 Week 10 : Day 2

by Ben Opp

Action taken in light of the promises of God yields results - big results.  Here, Jonathan's seemingly rash and crazy solo attack on a Philistine outpost turns into a massive victory for the nation of Israel, as a "panic sent by God" (vs. 15) engulfs the Philistine army.

I have never taken part in a battle, but I have seen God provide in smaller ways.  During my last few years of college in California, it seemed that God was calling me to continue playing the bassoon, an orchestral woodwind instrument I had been studying, and to pursue a career as an orchestral musician and teacher.

This is a little like attacking an enemy outpost by yourself.  There are very, very few jobs in the field, and tremendously heated competition for those few openings.  As I have pursued this, however, I have seen God open doors and make things possible that blow my mind - the purchase of a fine instrument far beyond my financial ability, acceptance and scholarship support at Eastman, performance opportunities with professional orchestras and summer festivals without even taking auditions, and many more.  These events have been too numerous and too timely to be random chance, and are far beyond what I could accomplish on my own.

Perhaps more importantly, I have been given tremendous opportunities to share my faith and further the Kingdom of God through my musical endeavors.  I have had great conversations about faith and truth with non-believing colleagues, had opportunities to disciple and share experiences with younger musicians who follow Jesus, and have raised money and awareness for African civil war victims alongside non-Christian friends who were introduced to God's desire for justice and peace.

There is still a long road ahead of me - I don't have a job yet in my field.  But I have seen enough of God providing thus far to push me forward in continuing to do something crazy.  The credit here is God's - he has made all of this happen.  The author of 1 Samuel realizes this too - credit here is given not to Jonathan, but to God.

God wants desperately to use us in powerful ways to transform the world around us and open people's eyes to the reality of his existence and love.  I think that this very often requires taking steps into craziness - into things that make no sense in human terms, but total sense in the context of an all-powerful God.  What is God calling you to do or say today that the world deems crazy?

A fellow traveler,

Ben

Re: 1 Samuel 14:15-23 : Leaving the Results to God

The title alone of this one grabbed me where I needed it this morning as I am stressing about planning for the Easter services. It is so easy to forget that the results are not my responsibility, but God's. All I must do is keep my heart in the right place, keep expecting that God is interested in every opportunity to help us bring glory to Him - and therefore trust Him to act - and keep stepping forward (not sit under a pomagranate tree scared to act), trust God will guide and recognize it when God moves.
Thanks:)

Re: 1 Samuel 14:15-23 : Leaving the Results to God

Yours is an excellent story, Ben. I tend to be a bit risk-averse, and stepping out in faith--even though I may see God working all around me--can be difficult for me to do. God may be pushing me in a particular direction, prodding me to take certain steps, but still, I want to hesitate. I don't want to risk what seems like a comfortable situation for something that may be less comfortable.

So your experiences help put a real-world, contemporary look on today's passage. I certainly appreciate it!

Ben, Thanks for sharing your personal story and how you've seen God at work in your life. I also appreciate your challenge that we can let God use us to transform the world around us and allow Him to show His power, even if all the details only make sense from God's big picture viewpoint and hard to see from our limited perspective.

Ben, Thanks so much for the fellowship this morning--sharing your life and how God is leading in it. I can't think of anything more encouraging than hearing how the Father is at work in an individual. Plodding or at breakneck speed, obscure or clear, listening to a story of God's good pleasure always leads me to praise. Thanks so much for sharing your story.

Hi, Ben. You already know our stories are pretty similar. Thanks for the encouragement, and the reminder that our radical actions, while crazy, all fit into a bigger story. I'm reminded too of our earlier reading, in chapter 7, another example of the Philistines defeated by unprepared Israelites (aka incredible action on God's part). Samuel plants a rock called Ebenezer, "Thus far the LORD helped us." I see all those "accomplishments": festivals, legendary teachers, Eastman, and even day-to-day provision, as places I can plant my own Ebenezer and be encouraged.
