In today’s Bible reading, we are introduced to two characters from one of the most famous stories in the Old Testament – the story of David and Goliath. As the mother of two boys, this story has a very fond spot in my heart. My boys love this Bible story! There is something so appealing about a story of a strong giant all decked out in the best armor and weapons of the day facing a young, ill-equipped shepherd boy.
This particular passage really sets the scene, describing in detail the enemy at large – Goliath the giant. It also details the reaction of the army: “Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified.”
Isn’t that often our first reaction when we meet the “giants” in our life? My real-life giants have never come in the form of a spear-wielding, armor-laden warrior. My giants have been intimidating, nonetheless. These have been some of the Goliaths in my life: a fruitless job search the year after I graduated from college; standing by my brother’s side as he went through a painful divorce; the long search for a mate; my sister-in-law (the mother of four young children) losing the battle with cancer; my mother’s brain injury; and my own daily small battles (such as keeping my sanity while raising my young boys). Perhaps you have faced or are facing similar “giants,” or even greater giants, in your own life.
Although I’ve often felt small and insignificant in the shadow of my giants, God has always provided help when facing those giants when I earnestly seek Him. The all-powerful God is interested in my life. He cares about the details in your life too.
I can’t wait until tomorrow to read the next installment in the story of David and Goliath – to read how God faithfully provides for David as he faces his great giant!
Your fellow traveler,
Laurie
