1 Samuel 19:1-7 Week 12 : Day 2

by Kathy Knight

1 Samuel 19.1-7 allows us to see just a small part of a remarkable friendship. The friendship is between Jonathan, King Saul’s son, and David, a sheep herder. What caught my attention, while reading this passage, was how strong a bond existed between these two men from such varied backgrounds. Jonathan’s father wanted to kill Jonathan’s friend. Not just any friend either. These two men were best friends. What would I have done in Jonathan’s place?

Now, as when I was younger, I have a great deal of respect for my father. When he says something, I listen. I take what he says about the topic or situation at hand and think about his words, thoughts, and ideas. So, I can only imagine Jonathan’s dilemma. Ultimately, Jonathan enters the breech between his father, the king, and his best friend, David. Jonathan takes on the role of reconciler. We read in verse 4 of how he, “…spoke well of David to Saul…” Finally, in verse 7, “…He brought him to Saul, and David was with Saul as before.” Wow! What a wonderful friend. So, I’m left wondering, ‘Do I have such a friend as Jonathan?’ I have friends that I love and I know they love me. Anyone of them would help me out.  But, do I have a friend like Jonathan? When I feel like I’ve messed up with my Heavenly Father, who stands in the breech I have made between my Heavenly Father and me. I do have such a friend. His name is Jesus. At any time, day or night, I can call upon Him. Jesus is there to help me reconcile with my Heavenly Father. Jesus wants us to have the best, richest relationship possible with God.  So, how about you? Perhaps you think God won’t accept you because of something you have done or said. Maybe something happened in church that keeps you from seeking a personal relationship with God. Right now you might feel alone and wish that what you hear about God could be true for you. Do you need a friend who is available at a moment’s notice? A friend who always has your best interests in mind with no hidden agenda of his own? David had Jonathan. Who do you have? Today, I recommend to you Jesus, as the friend you have been looking for. Honestly, you have only to ask Him, and Jesus will meet you where you are.

Your fellow traveler,

Kathy
