Does God test us? In this passage it seems David was tested. Saul had been pursuing him all over the countryside trying to kill him. Now Saul was in a vulnerable position, and David spared his life. Was it a test?
Another word for test is tempt. I don’t believe that God tempts us. I believe Satan tempts us. All week in our readings we have seen how David had complete faith in God. In this reading, David was presented with an opportunity, a temptation, to kill Saul and put an end to David’s running. Instead of succumbing to the temptation of the moment, David left judgment in God’s hands. David refused to usurp God’s role take Saul’s life. “It is mine to avenge; I will repay” (Deut.32:35). Once again David trusted God and made himself vulnerable to Saul. God rewarded David’s trust by causing Saul to repent (change his heart) and the chase ended.
I am confronted daily by many things – especially a lot of events reported in the news – that test my ability to trust in God’s plan. It seems that things are spinning out of control. Such temptation may also take the form of things that confront or threaten my family or personal life. I will take encouragement from this passage as a reminder that God is in control. Worry is nothing more than a demonstration of lack of trust in God. I will pray that his Spirit give me the strength to defeat worry and to trust in him. There are many things that are out of our control. We need to abandon worry and trust that God has a plan. The world will someday be redeemed. God will have his way.
Your fellow traveler,
Jack

Thank you, Jack. I, too, confess to worrying and it is my prayer to surrender this to our Lord and trust in His Master Plan for us all. May God protect us from doubt and worry and help us to focus our eyes on Him.
