Why is the World the Way it is? What if anything is God doing about it?

2012 Rte 365 : Genesis to Joshua

Daily Scripture Reading and Devotionals Written by Fellow Browncrofters

Why is the world the way it is? One big, honest question. If we had an answer for it, life might make a little more sense. As it is, the world seems to be stuck in a perpetual state of fast forward punctuated with acts of violence, oppression, suffering, tragedy, disaster, downturns, and uncertainty. These have become so much a part of life that we don’t even pause when we encounter them. We don’t have time. We have to keep moving. As we race forward to the next appointment—our smartphone reminding us that we are late—we wonder why it has to be this way. We wonder if God is planning on doing anything about it. We aren’t the only people who have ever wondered this.

We would like to invite you to take a journey with us, a journey on which you will meet some very real people who wrestled with some very real issues, some of the same issues we wrestle with today. Their stories are told in the first six books of our Bible (Genesis through Joshua). As we trace the fabric of their lives, we discover that their lives were marked with encounters with God, a God who was doing something about the way the world and life was. They had encounters with a God who made promises about setting the world right again, promises that He would use them to do it. In their stories, we discover that we, too, can encounter this God who makes promises, promises that make sense of our world and life, promises that reveal what He is doing and wants to do in and through us.

Set Apart
by Jason Knapp

We finally step away from precise instructions for building or making something for God’s sanctuary to preparing people for work in God’s sanctuary. The precise instructions are still there, though. There certainly is a lot of blood and gore in this reading!

Through it all, I kept thinking of the “preparation” Jesus went through to be our high priest: a crown of thorns, flogging, beating, derision and ultimately crucifixion. In comparison, the bull and rams had it easy (not to mention Aaron and his sons)! Jesus played the role first as the sacrifice so that he could play the role of high priest for us in perpetuity.

What does all this mean for us? Like Aaron needed to be set apart from the Israelites and Jesus needed to be set apart from all the rest of mankind, we are called to be set apart from this world. This involves sacrifice. Those around us strive and struggle to climb the corporate ladder, amass wealth, have the perfect body type and appear perfect in all they say and do. We are called to live differently.

Are you caught up chasing after worldly things? Find a community group where you can struggle together to break free and be set apart for Jesus!

Jason

Slowing
Hurry is a way of life. Slowing limits our speed, helping us recognize that the only place we can ever truly live with God is the present. This month, look for ways to slow down. Drive in the slow lane. Choose the longest checkout line. Move more slowly, or take longer with people and time to do normal tasks.
