How to Meet With God Through Scripture

One of God’s greatest desires is a life-changing relationship with you through Jesus. Opening up your life to this relationship by spending time with God is perhaps the best investment you can make in your life. Reading your Bible is one of the easiest ways to spend time with God. However, many of us struggle with reading our Bibles, mostly because we have never really been taught how to meet God through the words. Here are some helpful tips on how to meet God as you read Scripture.

:: Prepare your heart by coming into God’s presence and being still.
:: Read the text slowly, taking time to soak in the literal meaning of what you are reading. Sometimes it helps to read the text out loud.
:: Be still and in God’s presence for a minute.
:: Read the text again, slowly. Savor the words. What is being said? How do the events of the text fit with the preceding events? Looking ahead, how to the events fit with what’s next? What principles or big ideas might the text teach?
:: Read the text again, slowly. Ask God what He might want to say to you through the text.
:: Respond to God first by listening and then by saying the most honest thing you can say in response.
:: Write down any thoughts or conversations you had with God in your journal. Seek to write at least 200 words. Don’t worry about spelling or grammar. Just write what comes out. Keep these as a record of your time with God to which you can return later for reflection.
