This summer we will highlight leaders within the church through the Browncroft Blog Summer Interviews. Today, you will get to know John Iamaio. He serves as the area Cru Director and various capacities within Browncroft.
How do you serve at Browncroft?
I serve in a few different ways. First of all, my wife Laura and I are Browncroft Missionaries. We've worked with Cru ministering to college students since 2002. I am passionate about reaching the next generation of leaders living right here in our city and throughout our state. Second, I serve on the teaching and communications teams. That means I'll deliver a Sunday morning sermon 1-4 times per year. I also help with announcements as needed. Finally (and certainly not least), I am a co-host of the "Why God Why?" podcast. Our goal for that podcast is to reach people who have serious questions about faith but who might never walk through the doors of our church.
What do you love most about Browncroft?
The people. Browncroft is full of some of the most warm, gracious, gifted and generous people in Rochester. My friends at Browncroft have mentored me, prayed for me, encouraged me and given to our ministry. Through all the relationships that I have at Browncroft (a special shout out to our small group!), I have come to see Browncroft as more than a church. It's really another family.
What are you most passionate about in the area you serve?
One consistent theme that runs across all the areas that I serve is reaching people who are far from God. I am especially passionate about reaching the upcoming generation with the life changing message of Jesus. I believe in communicating honestly, transparently and in a way that is applicable to daily life. Many young people today have rejected Jesus without ever really seeing who he truly is. More than anything, I want them to see and experience Jesus.
What are you looking forward to in the area you serve for the 2019-20 year?
I love the variety of ways that I have an opportunity to serve at Browncroft. Each place has a special pull for me. I have dedicated the last 17 years of my life to reaching college students. I'm excited to see what God has in store for the New York state colleges in this coming year. I really enjoy the opportunities that I get to teach. I'll be speaking at the end of July. That's always a highlight for me. I also very excited about the "Why God Why" podcast. Co-hosting with Peter Englert and Harry Gibbs has been a ton of fun and has stretched me in new ways. I am looking forward to continuing to grow as a communicator and interviewer in that medium. My hope is that people will experience Jesus in a fresh way through the perspectives of the fantastic guests we have on the podcast.
What next steps or ways can Browncrofters get involved in the area you serve?
We are always looking for people who are passionate about reaching and ministering to college students. That has looked many different ways over the years. People have hosted students for holiday meals, established mentorship relationships, sent care packages, hosted events at their house and served in numerous other capacities. Our strategies for reaching students are always changing but the one thing that remains constant is that anyone who is investing in college students should probably really enjoy being around them...not a bad principle for anyone you are ministering to by the way. :-) For our podcast, we are always looking for people with audio technical expertise as well as guests who have compelling stories about something Jesus has done in their life. If you know stuff about starting a Youtube channel or any other cutting edge technology, we'd love to hear from you too...oh,, and something that everyone can do is subscribe to the podcast!
