Stories of life change
Deb Erbland
Eight years ago, if you had met me, I would have worked hard to convince you to like me, affirm me, be impressed with what and whom I knew and how much I’d accomplished. I was always comparing myself to those around me; control, manipulation, and criticism were my everyday tools fueled by my fears. Even though I had been a Christian since 1977, growth was stunted because of my hurts and hang-ups. As much as I desired Spiritual Transformation, I was stuck.
By intentionally working the 12 Steps of Celebrate Recovery, I am finally experiencing true peace and joy and the freedom in Christ offered to us all. My Recovery is equipping me with useful tools to navigate life one moment at a time. As I am learning to live being loved by God, I am privileged to serve in the Celebrate Recovery Ministry at BCC.
Here I have witnessed nearly 1000 people receive help and hope through God’s healing power. The positive impact on entire families is nothing short of miraculous. It’s exhilarating to meet each Tuesday night with the people God brings for the first time. I am able to champion and witness first steps of recovery from paralyzing hurts, hang-ups, and habits. We are a welcoming and safe community, a “church within the Church”, where we continue to reach the broken and hurting, and encourage healing and growth in Christ.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” Psalm 34:18

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
At Celebrate Recovery you can expect a safe and confidential place to open your life to receiving God’s grace in solving life’s problems. Celebrate Recovery participants open their lives by focusing on 12 Steps and 8 Recovery Principles rooted in Scripture. By working and applying these Biblical principles, participants begin to grow spiritually. As participants progress through the program they discover a personal, loving and forgiving Higher Power – Jesus Christ, the one and only true Higher Power.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND CELEBRATE RECOVERY?
Celebrate Recovery is for people who want freedom from, hurts, habits, and hang-ups. A hurt, habit, or hang-up is something that hinders our walk with God. The feeling of being HURT is an emotional reaction to another person’s behavior or to a disturbing situation. A HABIT is an addiction to someone or something. HANG-UPS are negative mental attitudes that are used to cope with people or adversity (anger, depression, fear, unforgiveness, etc.). Healing is available through applying the principles of a Bible based recovery process which opens up our lives to Christ, the ultimate healer.
WHAT MAKES CELEBRATE RECOVERY DIFFERENT?
While Celebrate Recovery is step-based program, it differs from other such programs in that it is:
- Based on Scripture.
- Emphasizes spiritual commitment to Jesus.
- Forward looking.
- Emphasizes personal responsibility.
- Contains Biblical truth to grow spiritually and emotionally.
- About all types of hurts, habits, and hang-ups.
