Described as atheists, agnostics, religiously unaffiliated, or “nothing in particular,” this group of people has become commonly referred to as the “nones.” A 2024 Pew Research report shares that, although most “nones” have some spiritual beliefs, they are skeptical, and the majority dislike or have had bad experiences with religious groups and individuals. In fact, Pew tells us that the majority of “nones” believe “religion causes division and superstition,” and 43% believe religion does more harm than good. Skewing younger, these adults are less apt to visit a church and find value in it, or to look to religion to answer their questions. However, most believe there is something spiritual beyond the natural world. Despite being largely uncomfortable with the Church, we know that human connection and community is something that they long for as they navigate an increasingly anxious culture.
How can we help our friends and neighbors in this demographic come to know the beauty of Jesus and find in Him the answer to every anxiety and the hope that we all long for?
This fall, Browncroft is intentionally seeking to reach this group missionally, through a program designed to meet them where they are at and make them feel safe and open to conversation.
Alpha aims to be a safe, judgment-free space to openly explore faith and the meaning of life from a Christian perspective.
On Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:30pm, starting September 16th, Browncroft is launching a new cohort of the Alpha program for younger adults, 18-39, specifically seeking to reach the “nones.” For those who haven’t yet come to a personal relationship with Jesus, or those who are skeptical or distrusting of Christianity and the Church, Alpha aims to be a safe, judgment-free space to openly explore faith and the meaning of life from a Christian perspective. It is a series of conversations where guests can ask hard questions, share their opinions, or just listen and connect with others over a free catered dinner.
After the meal each evening, participants get the conversation started by watching an episode in the Alpha film series that addresses the most common questions and concerns of those struggling with the idea of Christianity. Table hosts help to guide these conversations and foster a safe and low-pressure environment. This year, we are also pleased to offer a table specifically for Spanish speakers!
Over the course of eight weeks, our Alpha cohort will gather at New City Cafe. Some of you are probably familiar with this space, owned by one of our local ministry partners, 441 Ministries. 441 shares Alpha’s mission to seek and reach those who don’t yet know Jesus.
Would you join us prayerfully in this mission to reach our community for Jesus?
Would you join us prayerfully in this mission to reach our community for Jesus? Here are some specific ways you can partner with us– we could really use your help!
- Pray daily for the Alpha program. Include prayers for those you might be led to personally invite. (Remember, this year’s program is geared toward 18-39-year-olds.)
- Share our flyers and invites with friends, local businesses, and associates. You can find these in the Faith In Action alcove of our lobby. We want to get the word out!
- Join our prayer team— this is spiritual business and we want to follow God’s lead and see Him work supernaturally for our friends and neighbors. You can sign up here!
God is already at work and moving in people’s lives. May God lead us individually and corporately to be a part of His work bringing others into His community of love through His most excellent Good News!
Have questions about Alpha? Feel free to reach out to me, Kelly Fasoldt, at info@browncroft.org. I’d be happy to tell you more about this program and our heart behind it.
