The Crisis of Decision

There are few things more life-altering than having your first child. Couples wait in joyous expectation for their son or daughter to come into the world. Yet with all children challenges and difficulties will arise for which no parent can be fully prepared.

That was true for Joseph and Mary. As the time came for the baby’s dedication — an event prescribed in the Old Covenant — they brought the 6-week-old Jesus to the Temple. To their great surprise they encountered an old prophet who was moved by the Spirit to let them know that Jesus was God’s instrument to bring salvation to the world.

The child’s parents marveled at these words. But they came with a sober warning. Luke introduces here the shadow side of Jesus’ saving work. Both Jesus and Mary would pay a high price for this salvation. The consolation of Israel would not come without a great cost.

The announcement of Christmas is one of great joy. God has sent his Son to save the world. Yet the coming of Jesus brings with it a crisis of decision.

This child is destined to cause the rise and fall of many in Israel, and a to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed.

Luke 2:34-35

The offer of salvation is to all, but it must be considered and accepted by each person. It’s important as we celebrate Christmas as believers to keep in mind that many around us still do not know God’s saving grace.

PRAYER

PRACTICE

Spend five minutes in prayer for the spiritually lost people in your life.
